THE CONSULTATION
The first consultation takes place in my private consulting rooms at the Clinique de L’Union.
The first meeting is first and foremost to establish understanding and confidence between us. To do this successfully two elements are required: from my part, a real ability to listen intently to you, and from your part, ability to express as openly and honestly as possible the motive or your consultation.
Because it is at this first consultation that I can, by discovering your wishes and after a complete medical examination, combined with a study of your medical history, propose to you the best way of dealing with your request.
The first consultation is just contact between you and me. It does not necessarily mean that an operation will automatically take place but it establishes a point of depart.
Complementary examinations may be carried out.
Pre-op photos will be taken, and using these photos as a tool, I will describe to you the technique used, the advantages and disadvantages of the technique and the factor or risk compared to the benefits of the procedure.
A precise written document will be prepared with advice both pre and post surgeryin function of the procedure envisaged.
A precise estimate comprising the complete cost of the procedure including my fees, the fees of the anesthetist, the cost of the stay in hospital and any additional materials needed will be drawn up and established by my assistant.
A full written report of our consultation will be given to you and a copy also sent to your GP.
A time of reflection is then advised. During this time you can at any moment contact Laurence and Stephanie by phone or e.mail.
I systematically see each patient before the operation to discuss and re-discuss the objectives to be reached in order to put in place all the medical procedures necessary for the operation envisaged.
At the outcome of these two consultations, a climate of confidence between yourself and the medico/surgical team is a vital for a successful operation.
After deciding to go ahead with the operation, a consultation with an anesthetist is obligatory.
THE CONSULTATION WITH THE ANESTHETIST
For all operation, the patient must have a consultation with an anesthetist. During this consultation, the anesthetist will discuss with you the type/nature of operation you will have, your medical antecedents including previous operations, any allergies you have, also if you smoke or drink heavily or take non prescription drugs or stupefies.
Any prescription/non prescription medication you are taking at present must be declared to the anesthetist so a proper evaluation can be carried out. All this is done with the objective of evaluating any risk the operation might cause you (and also and upmost to prevent anything going wrong and in the worst possible outcome to advise you).
To evaluate any medical risks you may be prone to as a result of.
Additional tests may be needed for (blood tests heart monitoring etc).
As a result of these two consultations, the surgeon together with the anesthetist will consult together weighing up the benefits of the envisaged operation compared to the risks.
The anesthetist will propose to you the technique best adapted to your individual and specific need/case/situation.
– General anesthetic
– Local anesthetic (applied to the specific area being operated on)
– Deep local anesthetic with the sedation byintravenous perfusion.
The choice of which procedure to use will result from a discussion between yourself, myself, and the anesthetist.
In addition in order to prevent the risk of thrombosis and depending on your particular case:
– Elastic support stockings
-Hermetic boots
– Heparin (low molecular dosage) may be prescribed
At the outcome of these two consultations a climate of confidence between yourself and the medico/surgical team is a vital for a successful operation.

Pain relief and control is amongst my major priorities. A visual analogic scale of pain evaluation will be shown to you at regular intervals beginning form just after the operation in the recovery room.
Here once you have woken up after the operation, you will be asked to judge the degree of pain you are in on a scale of one to ten and according to your response the medical team will adjust your analgesic dosage until you are comfortable.
For patients who are at high risk of thrombosis, anti thrombosis stockings and hermetic boots will be used during the operation to keep the blood supply running smoothly during the operation and avoiding the risks of embolisms.
The operations using prosthesis are carried out in a specific operating room hyperaseptic.
